The meat processing company Kjarnafæði was founded on 19th of March 1985 by two brothers, Eidur and Hreinn Gunnlaugsson. Initially, the operation was housed in small premises at the North Iceland town of Akureyri, but with growing business, the operation has now all moved across the fjord to the village of Svalbardseyri.

Throughout the entire manufacturing process, Kjarnafaedi places utmost importance on ensuring the wholesome quality of its products. In fact, Kjarnafaedi can pride itself on both domestic and foreign quality standards such as the international ISO-9001 and ISO-22000 certifications and the A-certification awarded by the Federation of Icelandic Industries.

You can also find the Green Keyhole on many of Kjarnafæði products which stands for the most healthy food in that category.

You can find products from Kjarnafæði in most or all of the big supermarkets in Iceland as they sell well over 100 products, some seasonal other all year round. Pure Icelandic lamb, beef, pork and much more are examples of what Kjarnafæði is offering. Also the produce and sell toppings, sausages and the famous „hangikjöt“ or smoked lamb.

It is smoked in a traditional way that has been practised for hundreds of years on the island. First, it was applied by farmers to store the meet for the long winters in Iceland as the salt, and the smoke makes it last much longer. The tradition has become one of the Icelandic most signature dishes around Christmas and other holidays and is still maintained just because of its unique flavour.
